Chinese people may remain underdiagnosed and untreated for Fibromyalgia (FM) as there is a lack of awareness and understanding of the condition, and also limited treatment options.

A recent trial compared the efficacy and safety of pregabalin (flexibly dosed 300–450 mg/day) to placebo for managing pain in Chinese adults diagnosed with FM, following American College of Rheumatology 1990 criteria. The pain was recorded if ≥40 mm on a 100-mm scale. A change in mean pain score (MPS) from baseline to Week 14, measures of sleep and sleep interference were recorded with continuous monitoring of the Safety and tolerability.

The median dose of pregabalin was found to be 335 mg/day. MPS reduced significantly from baseline to Week 14 and a substantially greater number of patients experienced ≥30% and ≥50% reductions in MPS at Week 14 when treated with pregabalin than placebo. Improvements in measures of sleep and sleep interference along with a good tolerance were seen with pregabalin. Dizziness and somnolence were commonly reported. O and 9 subjects experienced serious adverse events (SAEs) in pregabalin-treated and placebo-treated groups respectively.

Thus, Pregabalin (300–450 mg/day) can be safely and effectively given to reduce pain and improve sleep in native Chinese subjects with FM.
